The Last of Us: The Intimate, Grounded Zombie Game That Opposed Resident Evil – According to Naughty Dog, the first Last of Us was developed as the “antithesis” of Resident Evil. The authors wisely chose to base the plot on close relationships while considering how to update the well-liked zombie formula back in the day.
Neil Druckmann, the creative director of the company, recently admitted that he undoubtedly appreciates Resident Evil and all of the series’ over-the-top horrors with unmatched opponent design. However, he made the choice to push for a more grounded and realistic appeal within the same genre when creating The Last of Us’ main pillars and environment.

Druckmann said, “We wanted to do the antithesis of Resident Evil, which I adore but is so over the top and you’re battling enormous spiders and it’s all about opponent variety. What if it’s about close relationships, an investigation of the unwavering love a parent feels for their child and the wonderful and horrifying things that could result from that?

However, some early reviewers who played the game’s beta before it was released were unimpressed at first with the updated formula. According to Druckmann, there were numerous inquiries as to why The Last of Us seems so “underwhelming” while other popular games at the time offered many more boss battles and unique weapons for the players. The truth is that that was always the aim, and the contentious original idea was a huge success when it was implemented.
While the diversity of enemies in both TLOU titles is undoubtedly considerably lower than in any Resident Evil game to date, the story and characters are what give Naughty Dog’s series such meaning and significance to millions of fans. Druckmann also claimed that “there’s more story to tell” in this universe, presumably alluding to a third film or the significance of the people and decisions made in the untitled Factions sequel, which we’ll learn more about later in 2023.
