Super Mario World’s prototype build has been posted online, giving us a glimpse of what the game might have looked like ten months before it was released in the US. The 1990 prototype, which was produced as part of global localization efforts, reveals some differences between early iterations and the finished product.
It is believed that this was one of the earliest builds generated for what would eventually become the North American version of Super Mario World, according to the Nintendo preservation website Forest of Illusion. The results were presented in a YouTube video, and the game itself is available for free download from the Forest of Illusion website.
The game’s script has undergone several notable adjustments, as the prototype text contained grammatical faults and even some unneeded material. For instance, the names of the two Boo characters, “Boo” Diddly and “Boo” Jackson, are both references to famous people who were omitted for unspecified reasons. Boo Diddly was actually employed in a prior game, which makes it even stranger that it was modified midway through localization, as Forest of Illusion points out.

The fact that the prototype is not entirely finished is what makes it interesting to explore. Forrest of Illusion discovers test levels and incomplete levels during the gameplay. Normally, the gamer would not have any access to these.
The idea of going through a less-polished version of Super Mario World might turn you off, but you might find the numerous debug features attractive. You can play any level you choose right away in the prototype because it was likely created for testing purposes, and you can even choose any power-up you want to use right now. A level can even be skipped entirely if it is very annoying to you by making Mario fly to the desired location. If you end the game, it will still appear that it is finished.

It’s good to have this prototype maintained for everyone to enjoy because it’s all too common for minor pieces of gaming history to be lost to time.
