Stone Cold Steve Austin was reportedly given a “enormous” payout by WWE to face Roman Reigns at WrestleMania 39, according to a story from Fightful Select that surfaced on Jan 23.
However, Dave Meltzer responded to that Sean Ross Sapp revelation in the episode of Wrestling Observer Radio that was broadcast early this morning:
“Roman Reigns was not the opponent in the proposed match. Brock Lesnar was there.
Stone Cold and Lesnar would obviously be Popular
A match between Stone Cold and Lesnar would obviously be popular. Apart from the fact that they are two of the biggest talents to have ever competed for WWE, there is a well-known “what if” (or perhaps a “WHAT if”? Stone Cold walked out of a 2002 match against Lesnar after learning that he was scheduled to lose to Lesnar on television with a small build (sorry, not sorry).
But it appears that the showdown will only ever be a fantasy. Meltzer draws this conclusion, as did many of us, from what transpired when Brock made his return on Raw XXX. From there, Dave combines what he has heard with what we have been witnessing on WWE television to determine who Reigns’ likely opponents for ‘Mania will be:
“But it’s not happening, as you can pretty much tell from the show tonight [Raw XXX],” It’s not on; anything may occur right now.
It has likely been discussed for months. Because I am aware that when the Brock Lesnar/Gunther topic came up, I was informed right away that it is not going to happen or that the notion is not currently being considered. Perhaps it will occur right now. However, the concept was a closely held secret. Stone Cold was the unknown.
“The bout has been cancelled, but based on tonight’s broadcast, it appears that Lesnar and Lashley will face off. I don’t have confirmation that that will be a WrestleMania match. They will undoubtedly both compete in the Rumble and fight. I’m not sure if that refers to WrestleMania or Montreal’s PPV [Feb. 18’s Elimination Chamber]. However, it seems as though it has something to do with WrestleMania.
“I’m not sure about Roman Reigns. However, based on who prevails in the Royal Rumble, I believe we will learn on Saturday night what Roman Reigns’ status will be. Sami Zayn and Cody Rhodes would immediately come to mind as the best choices when you looked at it. I can’t really think of anyone else in that circumstance at the moment. If Dwayne [“The Rock” Johnson] wants it, though, that appears to be out as well.
However, Stone Cold received a really generous offer, so that is the case.
At least the overall amount of WWE’s offer to the Texas Rattlesnake is acknowledged by all parties.
Are these two concepts distinct ones that have successfully navigated WWE’s red tape on the route to WrestleMania 39? Or are our two most notable scoopsters getting the shaft? Does it matter if Rhodes and/or Zayn face off against Reigns on April 1-2 at SoFi Stadium?
