Splatoon 3’s 2.1.0 Update Brings Hefty Nerf to Popular Ninja Squid Ability – Today’s 2.1.0 update for Splatoon 3 includes numerous bug fixes and balancing adjustments. It also significantly reduces the effectiveness of one skill that both Inklings and Octolings agree is essential.
The player can swim through ink without the normal ripples alerting other players to their passing thanks to the Ninja Squid skill. Normally, such ripples are fairly noticeable, but when the Ninja Squid ability is used, those ripples nearly disappear on surfaces other than walls (you can still see ripples pretty clearly if a Ninja Squid user tries to up along a wall). The majority of players thought the ability was much than worth the 10 percent reduction in overall swim speed that it required.

Since the introduction of Splatoon 3, most players have seen Ninja Squid as a necessary skill. Due to the limited amount of time available to complete the game, losing sight of your opponent even for a little moment could be the difference between life and death. Ninja Squid was essentially present on most players in every competitive game due to the ability to offset its speed penalty with other equipment.

Update data Ver.2.1.0 will be released for #Splatoon3 later this evening.
Please see the following page for additional details:https://t.co/xGFdoCAOnH— Splatoon North America (@SplatoonNA) January 17, 2023
With release 2.1.0, that might alter. After reverting to juvenile form, a player’s ink splash will no longer be invisible for a half-second, making Ninja Squid users easier to notice when they reappear. Additionally, gear with the Swim Up capability will no longer be able to offset the speed penalty for Ninja Squid, thus users will truly lose that 10% of overall swim speed.
While some fans are reportedly cheering the change, others are already lamenting the demise of Ninja Squid. We’ll have to wait and see if the nerf significantly reduces the number of gamers who enjoy swimming stealthily.
