Sonic the Hedgehog Creator Reveals Early Concept Art Showing Different Design of Sonic Character – Sonic the Hedgehog’s creator, Naoto Ohshima, has posted some very early concept drawings from the series on Twitter, revealing that Sonic formerly had spiky blue hair and looked like a young child. Since then, the photos have gained a lot of attention from series fans thanks to their viral nature.
Ohshima shared the images on Twitter along with a brief explanation that what appeared there was for a “action game about twin brothers who defend the dream world against Nightmare World’s boss Thirteen,” noting how this “developed into Sonic.”

When a follower explained how “I’ve heard that the first Sonic game was supposed to take place inside of a dreamlike world with strange looking monsters and creatures like Alice in Wonderland instead of robots and cute animals,” Ohshima replied that “it was an idea for a game that I came up with on my own. We became a team, we became Sonic and the idea of speed and balls was born and evolved into the current Sonic.” The designer went on to say that “since I switched to Sonic, I needed time to create a Sonic world.”
The concept illustration depicts a place with a pretty sizable loop in the background that has a strange resemblance to the Green Hill Zone map from Sonic the Hedgehog. The villain’s grin also has a resemblance to Dr. Robotnik. The image in question is remarkable since Sonic seems to have kept his spiky blue hair in the finished version of his appearance.

Since the birth of the Sonic franchise until Sonic Adventure’s December 23, 1998 release, Ohshima has been involved in one way or another. The series’ titular character underwent his first significant redesign in this particular episode. Later, Ohshima oversaw the creation of Blinx: The Time Sweeper and Blinx 2: Masters of Time and Space, its sequel.
Along with Mario and Solid Snake, Sonic the Hedgehog is one of the most recognisable video game characters. The next instalment in the franchise, Sonic Frontiers, will debut on November 8, 2022. On March 30, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, the second live-action instalment in the Sonic franchise, was released to positive reviews, further establishing the franchise’s status as a transmedia phenomenon.
