PS5 upright storage panic: Misunderstandings cleared and possibly no issue at all! – Owners of PS5 consoles who store them vertically were briefly paralysed last week when rumours that doing so would be harmful started to spread. It turns out the problem isn’t as urgent as people believed, and there might not even be a problem.
According to Wololo.net, keeping your PS5 upright as opposed to storing it horizontally may be bad for its health because the liquid metal within could seep onto other internal components. Yet unused PS5s that hadn’t even been unboxed were allegedly affected by the problem. It turns out that was just a miscommunication.
In response to PSU’s tweet, Wololo has since explained that what it initially took to be a reference to an unboxed PS5 was actually an unopened one. Like a console whose exterior casing has never been taken off to allow for under-the-hood maintenance. Wololo clarified, “What he meant (and said) was PS5s that had not been opened (the actual console!) by other repair businesses before him.
Here goes nothing:
There was a critical misunderstanding on our end when we thought TheCod3r said the Liquid Metal problem happened on unopened, in-box PS5s. What he said (and meant) was PS5s that had not been opened (the actual console!) by other repair shops prior to him.

Wololo adds in a subsequent tweet that there may still be an issue with liquid metal seeping from a PS5 while it is upright. Spawn Wave, a YouTuber who used to make a profession by fixing consoles, is not convinced. The barrier that PlayStation built to keep the liquid metal of the PS5 where it belongs is described in detail by Spawn Wave in the video below. He claims that PlayStation went above and above to ensure that the barrier doesn’t break.
You probably don’t need to worry about keeping your PS5 upright for the time being, at least. You shouldn’t be concerned that liquid metal will damage the console’s interior before you even take it out of the box. Having said that, if lying your console down would help you feel better and you have the equipment to do so, by all means do so.
