Nioh on Xbox is unlikely, according to Team Ninja

Nioh on Xbox is unlikely: Ninja Gaiden developer Team Ninja developed Nioh, one of the most popular Souls-like games outside of FromSoftware. In 2017, the game was released on PlayStation 4 to great acclaim following the release of Bloodborne, and later on PC, but if you were hoping for an Xbox release, you are out of luck.

With Wo Long: Fallen Dynasty, Team Ninja’s newest project from Nioh director Fumihiko Yasuda and Bloodborne producer Masaaki Yamagiwa, it launches on Xbox Game Pass on day one. That does not mean, however, that Nioh will be made available for Xbox, as Yasuda explained in an interview with VGC.

“There’s nothing really to note about [Nioh coming to Xbox],” Yasuda said. “Currently, there’s not really too much of a possibility of having Nioh on Xbox platforms, but we do hope Xbox fans enjoy Wo Long and look forward to that game coming out. That’s probably all we can say on that at the moment.”

When asked why Team Ninja partnered with Xbox rather than PlayStation for its newest game, Yasuda said, “We do feel there’s a bigger presence for the Xbox platform in Japan: we’re definitely seeing that here. We think that Game Pass is helping a lot more people get acquainted with the Xbox platform – a lot more people are coming in and playing games and being part of that.”

In case you have not played Nioh, it is an action RPG about a lone Irish sailor called William Adams, who was inspired by a historical Englishman who was one of the few Western Samurai. In the 1600s, you undertake a journey to the shores of Japan to fight against all manner of horrifying Oni. Many of its features are similar to those found in any FromSoftware Souls-like game, but it also introduces several new ones.

Using a bloodstain, for instance, does not only provide information about how somebody died, but also allows you to summon that individual as an NPC to fight in combat, using their gear and stats as models. You can also experience a few other interesting features, but if you wish to see it in action for yourself, you will need a computer or a PlayStation.
