Neil Druckmann Explains Why There Is Ellie’s Mother Is In HBO’s The Last Of Us – Neil Druckmann, a co-founder of Naughty Dog, outlined the origins of the decision to include Ellie’s mother in HBO’s The Last of Us adaptation.
More information has been revealed about how HBO’s The Last of Us has opted to both adhere to and depart from the original as the premiere date approaches. The most intriguing way it accomplishes this is by depicting Ellie’s mother (played by Ashley Johnson), who was previously only mentioned in notes and by other game characters. The decision to add Anna was explained in length by Neil Druckmann of Naughty Dog in a recent interview.
Druckmann discusses how the story can be approached differently between a TV show and a game in an interview with Rotten Tomatoes. He points out that the show can shift away from Joel and Ellie’s point of view to develop some of the other characters and strengthen their interactions with the main couple. Druckmann continues by saying that ideas added to the HBO version of The Last of Us after the game’s release include Ellie’s mother.
When Craig and I were discussing the story and breaking it down, Druckmann said, “And then there are other stories that were written since the game has come out for different projects that, for one reason or another, didn’t happen. When I mentioned some of those to him, he was wide-eyed like a fan and said ‘oh my god we have to put these on the screen, we’ve got to get them on the show.'”
“You got to see in the trailer we just put out that Ashley Johnson plays Ellie’s mom, and that was one of those stories that was near and dear to my heart and I’m so glad that it gets to live,” Druckmann continued, revealing that Anna is one of the specific concepts that was added to the programme from this mindset.
