MTG’s Head Designer On Release Fatigue: Admits Possible Flaws in Release Strategy

MTG’s Head Designer On Release Fatigue: Admits Possible Flaws in Release Strategy – The chief designer of Magic: The Gathering has defended the game’s current release schedule amid recurring worries that the community won’t be able to keep up with the game’s frequent releases of new items.

However, this rate of releases might not last indefinitely. It was also indicated that adjustments could be made to keep players happy if the current timetable proved to be too demanding for the game.

Magic: The Gathering’s MTG Head Designer On Release Fatigue Admits Possible Flaws in Release Strategy

MTG’s chief designer Mark Rosewater has spent the past few days writing about Magic’s hectic release schedule on his Blogatog site. He has been debunking accusations of “release weariness,” in which players complain that there are too many new items coming out, many of which feature fresh art treatments, Commander-specific cards, Secret Lairs, and crossovers with Universes Beyond.

First, he made the case that Magic should be viewed less as a product that you keep up with with every release and more as a “buffet,” stating that “putting out less food means that we’re depriving some diners of food that makes them most excited to come to the buffet… we’re always trying to attract new diners.” Some customers who have never tried a certain dish may sample it at the buffet.

However, this is an analogy Rosewater has previously used, and some members of the community have perceived it to be a way of saying “this product isn’t for you, ignore it.” In response to criticism that this is “aloof and glib” in another question, Rosewater assured supporters that just because this is the current policy doesn’t imply it will always be the case. “We’re a company,” she said. We lack any drive to pursue unsuccessful endeavours.

“If our current strategy is truly incorrect, that will become clear, and I guarantee we’ll take a different approach. However, the quantity of online talk won’t be the metric of success. It will include all the KPIs we consider (play metrics, sales metrics, digital metrics, social media data, etc.).” Rosewater declared, “The metrics over the past three years have not only been excellent, but also the greatest that we have ever seen. Magic made over a billion bucks [in 2022]—this was unprecedented for us.

The fact that some scheduling adjustments have already been made to account for release weariness is an intriguing point to raise. Examples include the last-minute reduction of Dominaria Remastered’s preview season to a single day and the week-long delay of Phyrexia: All Will Be One. Director of communications Blake Rasmussen stated at the time that they were to “provide a bit more breathing room between releases,” implying that metrics are already indicating some dissatisfaction with the current pace.

Notably, these adjustments were made soon after the devastating Bank of America study that blamed Hasbro’s declining stock value on Magic’s release schedule in the latter part of last year.

Unfortunately, because goods are created and planned years in advance, Magic frequently takes a while to adjust to the criteria it uses to make judgements. The abundance of releases that 2022 was known for is expected to continue in 2023, but if the metrics demand it, “something unusual” that Rosewater hinted at could start to take effect as early as 2024.
