Despite nearly two decades since the last entry, the series continues to inspire cultish devotion among those who have played them.

Launched on the PS1 in 1996 as Blood Omen: Legacy of Kain, the series included five games, concluding with Legacy of Kain: Defiance, released on both the PS2 and Xbox in 2003. As a result of the survey’s questions, it appears Crystal Dynamics is considering whether the series can be revived, although the exact nature of such a revival could be left open-ended, if Crystal Dynamics even decides to do so.

The survey questions include information regarding the participant’s platform of choice and whether he or she has played any of the games in the series or has watched someone else do so. As well, it asks what reaction the respondent would have to the announcement of a game featuring vampires (regardless of whether it is a Legacy of Kain game).

One of the more intriguing questions asks the participant to choose five options for “what, in your opinion, are the core features of an enjoyable vampire game”. Characteristics such as ‘moral ambiguity’, ‘traversal’, ‘vampire mythology’, ‘puzzles’, ‘blood feeding’, ‘combat’, shape shifting’, ‘nocturnal living’ are then listed among 19 options.

It is also important to discuss the nature of the revival. In Crystal Dynamics’ survey, participants were asked to rank whether a new game should be a remaster, a remake (“rebuild one of the original games from the ground up”), a reboot, or a sequel. There is also the question of what kind of game the potential new title would be: single player or multiplayer, and what genre it could fall under.

Since Crystal Dynamics was acquired by Embracer Group after being sold by Square Enix, it has become clear that the developer has been showing a greater interest in its IP.
