Kelly Rowland calmed the audience after Chris Brown’s American Music Award victory was booed on Sunday.
The former Destiny’s Child member announced that Brown had won the Favorite Male R&B Artist category, saying that the 33-year-old was unable to accept the award in person, but she would take it on his behalf.
Kelly Rowland urges the American Music Award’s audience to ‘chill out’
“Excuse me,” Rowland, 41, said amid booing from the audience. “Chill Out”
The “Dilemma” singer referred to Brown as a “incredible performer” and approached him personally.
“Chris, thank you so much for making great R&B music,” the actress concluded. “ll take this award [and] bring it to you. I love you. Congratulations, and congratulations to all the nominees in this category.”
Rowland’s defence of Brown, who has been accused of violence against women on multiple occasions, elicited conflicting reactions on social media.
“Why was Kelly Rowland going so hard for Chris brown on that stage?” one user wrote on Twitter. Another asked,
A third, on the other hand, expressed their appreciation, writing, “Thank you Kelly Rowland for that genuine love you just showed Chris Brown for winning.”
On Saturday, the dancer said that he was due to perform a Michael Jackson tribute at the 50th annual awards event.
“U SERIOUS?” Brown notified his Instagram followers over the weekend, uploading footage from what appeared to be a rehearsal. “WOULDVE been the ama performance but they cancelled me for reasons unknown.”
The show’s producers have yet to respond to the performance’s apparent cancellation.
Since attacking Rihanna in 2009, the composer has been accused of beating a woman in 2021 — an investigation that was ultimately discontinued owing to “insufficient evidence” — and being sued for allegedly drugging and raping a woman in 2020.
Brown disputed both charges, writing on Instagram following the 2020 accusation,“Whenever I’m releasing music or projects, ‘THEY’ try to pull some real bulls–t.”
Brown also made news for alleged fights with his ex-girlfriend Karreuche Tran, who appeared as a presenter on the event on Sunday.
Tran said in 2017 that Brown struck her in the stomach and forced her down a flight of stairs during their on-again, off-again relationship.
Following that, the actress acquired a five-year restraining order against her ex.
Brown refuted her claims at the time, saying she “doesn’t need a restraining order” and accusing her of attempting to “promote something.”
