DC Studios head James Gunn teased that Swamp Thing may be connected to the recently announced Creature Commandos animated series.
Gunn dropped the possible hint while replying to the DC Comics Twitter account, which was promoting the new free-to-read Valentine’s Day special Young Monsters in Love #1. The comic is an anthology of several stories involving romance on DC’s more supernatural side, and the provocative cover shows Swamp Thing kissing the Bride of Frankenstein while her horrified husband looks on.

Both the Creature Commandos show and the Swamp Thing movie will be part of the first “phase” of the new DC Universe, which Gunn titled “Chapter 1: Gods and Monsters.” The creator has previously said there will be plenty of crossover between the different movies and shows, much like in any cinematic universe.

It’s possible that Gunn could be teasing an early appearance by Swamp Thing in Creature Commandos before he appears in his own film, however, there is no confirmation that this was his intention.
Creature Commandos Vs. Swamp Thing
The Creature Commandos are an obscure team in the DC Universe. The group originally appeared in Weird War Tales #93 by J. M. DeMatteis and Pat Broderick as a group of classic horror monsters fighting in World War II.
The Commandos have changed quite a bit over the years, but typically include a werewolf, a vampire and a Frankenstein-esque monster. When DC Studios announced the new animated show, they revealed that the lineup would include DC’s heroic version of Frankenstein, the Bride of Frankenstein, the amphibian Dr. Nina Mazursky, Dr. Phosphorus, G.I. Robot, and Weasel from The Suicide Squad. The team will be led by Richard Flag Sr., the father of Rick Flag (played by Joel Kinnaman in both Suicide Squad movies).
Alec Holland, better known as the plant monster and nature elemental Swamp Thing, has made several appearances in movies and TV shows over the years. He appeared in two films, Swamp Thing and Return of Swamp Thing, where Holland was played by Twin Peaks actor Ray Wise.
More recently, the character was played by Derek Mears on the 2019 Swamp Thing show which premiered on the DC Universe streaming service. The new DC Universe’s movie will exist on the edge of the new DCU, but will play a large role in its overarching plot.
