In this article, I am going to teach you how to fix the “Destination folder already exists” error in WordPress. This is very common and frustrating error and it happens when you are trying to upload a new file or an update your existing one to your WordPress website. It can happen for various reasons like:
You are trying to upload a file to a directory that has already been used for a similar upload.
You are trying to upload a file to a directory with a name that
is similar to a directory that already contains a file with the same name. There is a WordPress setting named “Maximum allowed filename characters” which is set to 50 by default. This means that if you try to upload a file with more than 49 characters, it will give you this error. If you are using cPanel or DirectAdmin, then there is a setting called “Maximum path depth” which is also set to 50 by default. This means that if you try to put a directory inside another directory, it will give you this error.
In this case, the solution is very simple and easy to do. All you need to do is go to your WordPress admin area and open the “Settings” panel. On the left side of the page, you will see “Advanced” option. Click on that. Then in the text box that appears, type in the following: 20 Save the settings and refresh your screen. Then try to upload your file again. It should work without any problem. This setting controls the maximum allowed filename characters as well as the maximum allowed path depth. A lower value means that you can use longer filenames or deeper directory structures. A higher value means that you have to shorten your filenames or stay within a certain path depth. In my case, I have a pretty deep site structure and I have all my images in a sub-directory named “images”. So, I keep the path depth at 20 and use shorter filenames. Lower values make sense if you are using a lower value for Maximum allowed filename characters. Now that you know how to fix the “Destination folder already exists” error, I am going to tell you another trick which will help you to avoid this error in the first place.
