    Cyberpunk 2077 Quest Director defends game’s story, claims it’s more non-linear than players realize – It took Cyberpunk 2077 some time to win over fans, with numerous hotfixes and patches bringing the game closer to what we anticipated in 2020. One aspect of 2077 is still drawing criticism, though; viewers think the plot is too linear. In response to this criticism, the quest’s director Pawe Sasko has stated that he may not entirely concur with the viewpoint.

    Sasko asserted during a livestream that he thinks 2077 has more branching storylines than its audience is aware of. In response to a fan, he claims that “personally” he “doesn’t understand the criticism” the story received in this regard and provides instances of how the plot shifts based on the type of V you’re playing. Even worse, he gives a very spoilery example of a canon divergence that could occur later in the game and that some fans might not even be aware of.

    “If you use such a strict definition of what is linear and what is not, you get to a [point] where only the biggest branches matter and nothing else,” says Sasko (thanks, Twinfinite) “I think Cyberpunk is fucking crazy with the amount of non-linearity and openness there is to it.”

    Sasko continues by discussing his opinion of non-linearity in video games and why he thinks Cyberpunk 2077 is replete with it. “The overall quest structure is incredibly non-linear,” he says. “And that’s not even considering the choices within the quests themselves. There are many things that happen.”

    You can save Takemura, which is one of these elements that many newer gamers are unaware of. Since there is no in-game prompt to check on him, most people will miss it on their first playthrough. Instead, you must voluntarily deviate from the course to do so.

    Sasko adds more detail on this: “The possibility of Takemura’s death is such a huge, enormous branch that genuinely affects so many other things along the line. Making it function in each of those ways required a lot of effort.”

    This is a “choice” that many would not have been aware they made because it is done softly, which has led to some backlash in the neighbourhood. However, Sasko thinks that this was “slightly overblown.” He continues: “I’m not saying that we have done some kind of fucking wonderful job. I think it’s fine, I think it could have been better.”

    Sasko believes that gamers were anticipating significant, up-front story branches, like selecting a particular group. However, since you can get multiple endings based on who you assisted in Night City, a lot of 2077’s divergent routes depend on how much effort you’re willing to put in. However, if you like to complete all the side content regardless, this might not feel like a branching path to you.

    Overall, it appears that the playerbase and developers have quite different ideas of what it means for a game to be “non-linear.” However, now that the team is aware of what was anticipated, it’s feasible that the expansion, Phantom Liberty, will return to earlier decision-making.
