MCU-style Lord of the Rings : Although The Rings of Power has received critical acclaim, it has divided long-time Lord of the Rings fans. There are some who disagree with the way that J.R.R. Tolkien’s tales have been retold in the show, as it takes place in the second age of the author. The situation could have been very different if Netflix had pitched its own unique idea five years ago, as it was one of several studios that presented a proposal for the show.
In a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, the showrunners of Rings Of Power were able to provide a glimpse inside their war room for season two. J.D. Payne and Patrick McKay Payne wanted to help fans understand how a show of this magnitude has come together, and that story begins in 2017 when the Tolkien Estate made the call. It called seeking assistance in developing a television series based on the Lord of the Rings.

HBO and Netflix were two of the major players who tried to obtain the Estate’s support. According to HBO, the show would be set in the Third Age. To effectively retell the story told in Peter Jackson’s trilogy, which Christopher Tolkien infamously despised. It was a clever idea, but it was rejected. This is similar to Netflix’s plan to divide up the Lord of the Rings universe similarly to the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

“They took the Marvel approach and that completely freaked out the estate,” an insider revealed. There were apparently individual shows devoted to Aragorn’s story, Gandalf’s origins, as well as other characters that even casual fans would have recognized immediately. Even though Amazon reportedly offered less for the project, Prime’s proposal was chosen over Amazon’s, as the Tolkien Estate clearly disliked that idea.

The fact that those initial pitches took place half a decade ago is further evidence of the amount of work that has gone into making Rings Of Power a reality. It has clearly been an enormous success for Amazon, despite some nitpicking from hardcore fans. Approximately 25 million people watched its premiere episode, and filming for season two has already begun.
